REFERRAL LETTER
The permit application in respect of the above, received and reviewed on 09 April 2025 by the KwaZulu-Natal Amafa and Research Institute (The Institute) refers.
Please be advised as follows:
- The committee noted that Heritage Report had recommended the replacement of the Broseley tiles with s-profile corrugated sheeting because the tiles were brittle and no longer readily available.
- The committee pointed out that second hand tiles were available from Bilmark and new tiles could be imported.
- The plans proposed the insertion of shutter board covered with malthoid under the Broseley tiles and the alternate option of replacing a section of the building with corrugated metal sheeting. However, the plans did not include a roof plan.
- It was noted that this application had not been linked to the application that was submitted by the lead architect and Mr Mhlaba stressed that he had not taken the project over but was acting is his capacity as a heritage specialist.
- It was agreed that the public needed to be consulted with regard to such a major change to the visual appearance of the building.
- The Heritage Committee of the SAIA-KZN, the Harward Old Boys Association and the Pietermaritzburg Heritage Society must be consulted. – Amafa to consult.
The application was therefore referred for further requirements.
