Descriptions
The area concerned at the time of the battle of Modder River had a farmhouse, outbuildings, and kraals. These were occupied by Boer forces and used to try and oppose a British force from crossing the Riet River at a drift about 300 metres behind the buildings. This British force attacked the buildings, driving away the defenders and crossed the drift, which action enabled a British victory and Boer defeat in this battle. The building was then used as a hospital for wounded troops. It was demolished and another farmhouse (Seduan) built after the war. In this specific area is a monument to the British forces.
The area concerned is open veld on level ground which is uncultivated and not used for any farming purposes.
