Grading
Geosite covering sandstone and mudstone in the low eastern cliff of the Tanqua River. The geological succession displays sedimentary features indicating original deposition in a shallow interdistributary bay environment. The geosite is easily accessible and should be classified as a local heritage site. Grading by: DOUG COLE
The sandstone displays channel features, load casts and dewatering structures and represents crevasse distributary channels with associated levee and overbank deposits prograding over interdistributary muds. It forms part of the Permian Waterford Formation and such exposures are rare. This geosite is easily accessible lying close to the road from Sutherland to the Tanqua Karoo near the base of Verlatenkloof Pass. Modern day interdistributary sediments are deposited subaqueously in offshore regions and this geosite enables one to see such deposits in the geological record.
