Geological section on south-facing slope of low ridge, 700 metres SW of Witpoort homestead and 25 km west of Prince Albert. The section covers the steeply-dipping (50 - 80 degrees) Prince Albert Formation and forms the holostratotype, since no acceptable exposures of the formation are present closer to Prince Albert. The site corresponds with the base of the formation where dark grey shale conformably overlies diamictite of the Dwyka Group. A holostratotype is an essential component of a defined stratigraphic unit and this locality should be classified as a local heritage site. Grading by: DOUG COLE

Statement of Significance

The base of the Prince Albert Formation holostratotype is well-exposed on the lower slopes of a ridge and lies 200 metres north of a minor road. The formation strikes east-northeast on the southern limb of a major syncline. The holostratotype is named after the town of Prince Albert, 25 km to the east.
