Geological section on south-facing slope of low ridge, 600 metres SW of Witpoort homestead and 25 km west of Prince Albert. The section covers the steeply-dipping (50 - 80 degrees) Prince Albert Formation and forms the holostratotype, which is 100 metres thick. The site corresponds with the top of the formation where dark grey and greenish grey shale is conformably overlain by white-weathering, black, carbonaceous shale of the Whitehill Formation. A holostratotype is an essential component of a defined stratigraphic unit and this locality should be classified as a local heritage site. Grading by: DOUG COLE

The top of the Prince Albert Formation holostratotype is well-exposed on the lower slopes of a ridge and lies 400 metres north of a minor road. The formation strikes east-northeast on the southern limb of a major syncline. The holostratotype is named after the town of Prince Albert, 25 km to the east.
