    Site History

The wine cellar, erected in 1702, is still in use and is indeed a historical monument with many features that have not changed over 300 years. The foundation, walls and roof structure bear witness to an era long forgotten by later generations. The old stone foundation can still be seen today. This wine cellar is one of the few remaining original wine cellars still in use in South Africa; another is Muratie north of Stellenbosch. Inappropriate use can damage or destroy this priceless VOC and Tygerberg treasure.
