Painting

Pipe made of round gourd with long stem. It has a short reed added as a shaft and on top of this is a round ceramic bowl that flares out at the upper end, There is some engraving around the base of this bowl and a copper ring around the shaft. There is a separate cuplike cover for this bowl made from rusty metal sheet

Axe with head that projects backwards into a truncated cone-like shape. The blade is a long triangle that flares out at its end and narrows at the opposite end where it is inserted into the shaft. The shaft is decorated with linear and geometric designs carved into its surface.

Staff with snakes twining up and down the shaft and a carved crocodile/lizard situated 2/3 of the way up shaft. Finial is in the shape of a head with a relief band around neck

A fluted leg that flares out at its base at either end. Flat crossbar projects over leg ends to end in a strip of 6 rounded pleats. Above legs on the top of the crossbar are triangular designs with their tops pointing inwards and joined. They are slightly raised above the crossbar plane. Truncated inverted roughly cylindrical projection from underside of crossbar bar. Crack in leg.

Flat horizontal bar with three rows of amasumpa-like bumps at either end. Three solid legs - the two end with two grooves carved down their length and the middle one with one central groove and horizontal ridges carved across.

Upper transverse plane curved up at either end with ends terminating in a square vertical section with carved linear patterns. Vertical support consisting of a X-shaped support that is divided into an upper and lower section with a horizontal bar. These end in a raised bilobal base with a projecting V-shape central front and back.

Upper transverse plane curved up at either end with ends terminating in a square vertical section with carved linear pattern at either ends. 1/3 of upper support as well as a section of the support column below missing. Vertical support consisting of two upped V-shapes and two lower inverted V-shapes each decorated with carved grooves at an angle. Support is divided into an upper and lower section by a horizontal section with carved patterns.. These end in a raised bilobal base with a projecting V-shape central front and back decorated with linear grooves.

Rectangular crossbar curved and decorated at the narrow ends with a row of small quadrilateral shapes carved in relief. The grain of the wood is prominent. Lugs are rectangular facing sides and decorated with a large incised triangle filled with quadrilaterals carved in relief. Column is X shaped with an ovoid disc at centre. Base is ovoid but has a piece broken off. The edge is decorated with rounded pleats which flare outwards slightly.

Upper transverse plane curved up at either end with with carved linear patterns. Vertical support consisting of one support bar leaning at a 45 degree angle and two opposite bars leaning in the opposite direction. These end in a flat losenge-shaped base.

Rectangular crossbar, curved and decorated near the narrow ends with a row of triangles carved in relief. Lugs are rectangular blocks. Two short rectangular pillars which are wider towards their bases slope inward to rest on a horizontal, ovoid bar which is supported by two broad multifaceted pillars. Bare is flat ovoid nicked at centre front and back.

Rectangular crossbar, curved and decorated with a differently arranged row of incised triangles at each flattened ends. Lugs are small rectangular blocks. Two rectangular pillars form a V which rests on a rectangular block. The base is two flat linked circles with a tiny triangle at the centre front and back.

Upper transverse plane curved up at either end with lugs projecting from underside. Vertical support consisting of an X-shape with a vertical bar centrally placed so that all intersect at the centre which takes the form of a circular shape that is flattened front an back The support bars have triangular patters carved into them. These rest on a flat rectangular base that has two centrally placed indentations each front and back. The lugs and the central circular shape each have two projecting metal pieces added.

Rectangular crossbar curved and decorated at the narrow ends with a row of zigzags craved in relief. Lugs side-facing open rectangles. The one on the left has a large piece broken off it. The right has two protruding filled arches. Four rectangular pillars, two at the front and two at the back forming a double "X" shape. Base consists of two flat circles joined by a rectangular bar.

Upper transverse plane curved up at either end with carved patterns at either end. Upper surface also has two sets of carved triangular V-patterns. Vertical support consisting of three X-shaped supports divided into upper and lower sections by circular motifs. All these surfaces are decorated with linear grooved patterns. These end in a slightly raised bilobal base with a projecting bifurcated V-shape centre front and back.

Rectangular crossbar curved and decorated near the narrow ends with two rows of zigzags carved in relief. Lugs are filled arches facing front. Two rectangular pillars curving inward slightly and decorated with a row of narrow horizontal rounded pleats running down the centre front and back as well as three open arches inside and one outside. base consists of two truncated cones linked at centre by an inverted truncated cone at the base of which is cut an unusual ovoid at front and back. Split legs at either end. Amasumpa-like bumps carved onto vertical end of top transverse section. Carved patterns on legs asymmetrical - one with interlocking diamond patterns and the other with three carved ridges and interlocking diamond patterns.(CANT SEE OTHER SIDE ON PHOTO)

Rectangular crossbar curved and decorated on the flattened narrow ends with a row of deeply incised grooves. The crossbar is unusually thick. No lugs. Two rectangular pillars joined by means of a short bar 15mm below the crossbar. The surfaces of the front, back and outer sides are decorated by deeply incised triangles except for the front right which has incised diamonds on it. Base is a truncated oval cone with a small triangle carved in relief at centre front and back.

Rectangular crossbar very slightly curved and decorated at narrow ends with a raised edge covered with incised cross-hatching. Lug is downwards pointing truncated cone at centre of crossbar. Legs are 4 open circles two are front and two at back, flattened at base and decorated with sections of incised parallel lines. These incisions and the insides of the circle have been blackened. Comment: the central lug, 4 legs and lack of base suggest Swazi or Zulu influence (Africana Notes and News 1987, vol 27 no 8. Pg 314

A double head-rest carved out of one piece of wood. The crossbars are identical except that one is 5mm longer. Rectangular, curved and decorated on the flattened ends with a row of zigzags carved in relief. One lug each on outer sides. Closed arches facing sides. The lugs on the inner sides have become incorporated into the column. Three grooved pillars. Tow stretching diagonally from near the centre of the base to the outsides of the crossbars. The third pillar reaches vertically from the centre of the base to join an inverted open arch which links the two crossbars. The base is four flat circles in a row, joined by three rectangular bars. The two outer circles support open, front-facing arches.

Double head-rest with a box in the centre; carved of one piece of wood, except for the lid of the box. One headrest is 5mm longer and higher than the other. Crossbars are rectangular and decorated on the flattened, and blackened narrow ends with a row of zigzags carved in relief. Two lugs for each headrest -blackened rectangles facing sides. Each has a one rectangular pillar, decorated at front and back with the upper and lower thirds being blackened and the central third having two rounded horizontal pleats. The columns are joined by a cylindrical bar to the central rectangular box with a lid which opens on a pin, and which has a handle in the shape of a fin. Bases are flat ovoids with the edges blackened.

Long flat slightly curved crossbar decorated near each end with two zigzag lines. Two cylindrical pillars that widen towards their base angled in to rest on a flat ovoid shaped platform. Two cylindrical pillars project from platform and join a flat quatrefoil base with triangular projections at centre front and back. The platform has a central ridge running side to side and a nick out of its two side ends.

Female torso as caryatid holding up upper transverse section. Red seed/bead as eyes.

Narrow crossbar, rectangular and slightly curved. Decorated at narrow edges with a row of incised blackened rectangles. Lugs are small rough cubes. Column consists of anthropomorphic head and torso. Face well defined with eyes made of black and red seed beads, (probably of Erythrina Lysistemom Hutch.)and ears close to head. Torso shows little detail. Arms bent with elbows and forearms resting on base. Fingers, large and well defined. Base circular Comments: The wood used is like the wood used for JAG 1987.3.12, light in colour and weight. Size is similar too which suggests a common origin for these two headrests. The whole of JAG 1987.3.13 is slightly reddened.

Rectangular crossbar, curved, and decorated near the arrow ends with a row of tiny incised triangles. Lugs semi-circles facing front. Columns consisting of two upended arches, cylindrical in cross-section, one at front and one at back, supported on a half-cylinder with open ends facing sides, decorated with a raised band at centre. Flat base roughly ovoid, with two small triangular nips out of centre front and back. A piece is broken off one side.

Rectangular crossbar, curved and decorated near the narrow ends with a row of zigzags carved in relief. Lugs are rectangular, facing sides and blackened. Two pillars slope inwards from the crossbar towards a horizontal disc in centre from which two pillars curve outward toward the base. Base consists of three, flat, linked circles.
