Vanitas theme work, associated with still-life painting where arrangement of objects suggest an underlying meaning. Image depicts a twist of tobacco, lemon, grapevine, bread and crab, with a glass of wine, and ornate tableware, all present on a table with white tablecloth. Artwork may depict the the emptiness of life and the deception of appearance i.e. attractive-looking lemon turns out to be sour. May also have religious connotations with red wine (blood of Christ) and bread (body of Christ)

Melancholia contains an overwhelming ironic profusion of objects in space: food, candles, flowers, shells, vessels, sculptures, animals, mirrors are piled together i a complex construction that explores concerns of violation and celebration, transgression and desire. Almost every object carries an allegorical meaning that can be decoded and there are also many art historical appropriations and references. 

Penny Siopis' work is concerned with excess, history, tradition, ritual and sexuality.

Heavily-layered and vibrantly-coloured oil work showing a large feast in an elaborately decorated and installed room with a multitude of objects laying around to show the excesses, gluttony, riches and spoils of the South African apartheid state.  Melancholia is one of the most important pieces of 1980's struggle art, and also speaks to Siopis' work around politics, the feminine and her struggle art in general.
