OR Tambo left South Africa on 28 March 1960 and received a hero's welcome by tens of thousands at this airport when he and his family returned on 15 December 1990 after 30 years in exile. Oliver Tambo’s grave was declared a National Heritage site when he died but lost this status when his wife, Adelaide Tambo died and was buried alongside him. However their grave was re-declared as a National Heritage site in October 2012.

The Statue of OR Tambo is situated inside the OR Tambo international Airport. It's at entrance 2 , opposite Post office and on the sides there's a waiting area with chairs and at the back . The statue is situated at the front of those chairs .
