The ICC is a modern construction of the former prison.Purpose:Date Unveiled: Designer: Builder: Person/Institution Commemorated: This Plaque commemorates the history of the liberation movement of south africa, in particular following events. In front of plaque- Durban Central Prison Site. Towers and wall of the former central prison preserved for the people of Durban. This Plaque commemorates the history of the liberation movement of south africa, in particular following events. 1946- 1948 passive resistance campaign led by Dr GM (Monty) Naicker and Dr Yusuf M Dadoo. 1952 Defiance campaign led by the 1960 nobel peace prize winner chief Ablert John Luthuli. These and many other men and women were imprisoned and detained here in the course of the struggle for human rights and the removal of discriminatory laws. In back of the plaque- Liberation Tower. " South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in or diversity." Constitution of the republic of South Africa 1996. See liberation plaque on far side of tower.
