    On the 21st March 1990, A march was organized by the residents of Mpophomeni to commemorate Sharpville Day. (Now known as Human Rights day)The police were in attendance in vehicles to keep peace. Unbeknown to the occupants of police vehicles, a group of small children had gathered in a nearby field to watch the marchers as they approached what is known as Nelson Mandela Avenue from the West. The death of the six year old girl Nokulunga Gumede who was run down by the Military vehicle (Casper) during the cycle of violence that was taking place in the township. The military vehicle did not take any notice that it had knocked down a young girl since that it had changed many people's hearts to stop the violence. This stone Mark's the site of these awful events. Nokulunga Gumede, a daughter of Mr Khumalo and Ms Gumede, was buried at the Mpophomeni cemetery. She was six years (born 11 August 1984) when her life was so tragically cut short.
