    Description

The area was named Orlando East after the first Chairman of the native affairs committee, councilor Edwin Orlando Leake. The heritage symbol is in Orlando East, the oldest neighborhood in Soweto. This township was established in 1931 when the Johannesburg City Council set aside a large tract of farmland to build houses for the rapidly growing native population of Johannesburg. The government was desperate to move all black people out of the inner city.
