The former Northway was renamed Kenneth Kaunda Road to commemorate one of the founding fathers of post colonial Africa. Dr Kenneth Kaunda was president of Zambia from independence in 1964 until 1991. Under his leadership Zambia was key supporter of the liberation movement in South Africa.
