    Description

    The main function was to guard the King William's Town/East London road. It is associated with a variety of historical characters, such as Col John Maclean (Chief of Commissioner of British Kaffiraria) Members of of the British German Legion were housed at the fort in 1857 and the two prophetesses Nonqawuse and Nonkosi were detained there for some time after the CATTLE KILLING MOVEMENT. It was abandoned in 1867
