    Description

    - The purpose of The Hartley Estate Tamil and Telegu cemetery is to commemorate THE 1860 INDIAN INDENTURED LABOURERS WHO CAME TO SOUTH AFRICA. - Between 16 November 1860 and 11 July 1911 approximately 152 184 Indian indentured labourers were brought to South Africa. - The first ship to bring these labourers was the 'TRURO', and the last was 'UMLAZI'. - The ports of Calcutta and Madras served as points of embarkation. - When the ships left India, the name of the person, his /her age, sex, caste, height, area or village she /he came from, the name of the ship and the year they were documented. - A 'Ship List' of all passengers was compiled and when the labourers arrived in the colony of Natal, the employer's name was also entered into the register. - This record served to keep track of of the Indians. Even at the later years the Indians were not allowed to leave their province unless they were in possession of a permit.
