    The commemorative Cairn is old and the cross is chapped. Also the name of the other maker is scratched off. There two commemorative Cairns of this kind and they both serve as a directive measure to the Mission Station in Witpoort that was established in 1822.Purpose:

    It serves a signature purpose due to the fact that it gives direction to one of the first Transvaal Mission Stations located in Witpoort. It gives honor to Rev. S. Broadbent and Rev. T. L. Hodgson who were the first Europeans to cross the Vaal River. The Mission Station was established in 1822 by the above reverends.
