This modest pioneer cottage is,as far as can be ascertained, the oldest documented and restored town in South Africa. Schreuderhuis was built in 1709 by sebastian schreuder,a former mercenary soldier of the V.o.C. Dutch east India company. He was sent from Cape Town to the colony of Stellenbosch in August 1707 as a secretary of the public mill.in 1708 he left the employ of the company and on the 10 December 1709 he was granted the land on which the house stands.By January 1710,sebastian screuder had been appointed as a court messenger of Stellenbosch and Drakenstein. With yhe financial assistance of the Cape Provincial administration, the Stellenbosch Museum acquired the property from Lubble family in 1973.it took nearly two years to restored the building to its original appearance. On the 6the of June 1974 the building was declared a National Monument.
