The Obelisk is to honour the memory of the 22 officers and 590 N.C.Offers and men of the 1st and 2nd Battns 24th regiment who fell in action of the field of Isandlwana on the 22nd January 1879 and in the defence of Rorkes Drift in the 22nd and 23rd of January in 1879
