The hard road from Cape Town to the interior was constructed in 1845.The road initially known as Maitland Road and renamed Voortrekker Road in 1938 had its originsĀ as a wagon route used by farmers to transport produce and livestock to the Cape town markets .Outspan were located along the route to provide resting places for people and livestock. Belleville initially known as Twaalf Myl,evolved around the local outspend Hardekraaltjie .Twenty-one milestone markets were placed on the road measuring the distance in English statue miles from the Town house on Green market square .The marker stone were cut from single slabs of blue slate quarried on Robbin Island by convict labour.
