Exxaro submitted a MRA for the Belfast Project in accordance with requirements contained in the MPRDA. The DMR awarded a mining right for the Belfast Project in 2015. Exxaro also applied for Environmental Authorisation in terms of the NEMA to the MDEDET, who granted authorisation on 4 July 2013. The development affected 32 households and around 200 graves.
SAHRA issued permits to exhume and relocate around 160 graves. The grave relocations were completed in October 2019. Sibsequently, an unknown grave was discovered in close proximity to the current open pit mine. the SAHRA BGG required that this grave be relocated as a 100 m buffer cannot be maintained.
