Interim CommentSouth African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) Archaeology, Palaeontology and Meteorites (APM) Unit cannot comment on this application as the HIA submitted to the case does not assess the impacts of the proposed development in the current EA application. Furthermore, the report is outdated with no addendum of a recent field based survey to determine the current conditions and significance of the indentified heritage resources. The destruction of the existing road and construction of the new road may impact highly palaeontologically significant rock strata and as per SAHRA's palaeo-sensitivity a field base Palaeontological Impact Assessment must be undertaken by a suitably qualified palaeontologist.SAHRA will comment on this proposed development once the following is submitted to the case for comments:

A field based PIA is undertaken by suitably qualified palaeontologist and the report submitted to the case for comments.
A new field based survey by an archaeologist must be undertaken, and a new HIA must be complied.
The HIA must adhere to section 38(3) of the NHRA and the 2006 minimum standards for archaeological component of a Heritage Impact Assessment guideline documents. This HIA must also contain a tracklog and a summary of the results of the PIA report and make a complete impact assessment of all heritage resources.
