Grave Relocation of 42 graves at Mafube Coal, Mpumalanga

Mafube is currently expanding its operations as part of the Life Extension (Lifex) Project to exploit the Nooitgedacht coal reserves on the farms Nooitgedacht 417 JS and Roodepoort 418 JS, where the burial grounds are. Digby Wells applied for a grave relocation permit and received it for 369 graves that were identified through a Heritage Impact Asssesment (HIA), the chance find graves were not identified at this time and were discovered later. At the time of exhumations other next of kins approached Digby Wells and claimed graves that were unknown/unclaimed. During this process a family went with the team to identify graves in another cemetery, this cemetery was not previously identified and was not included in the initial grave relocation permit that Digby Wells applied for. Digby Wells hereby applies for a grave relocation permit for 2 two graveyards that were recently discovered and were not part of the initial permit application. The project is in Mafube, Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, Mpumalanga.
