Proposal Description
The proposal is for an aerial cableway to be constructed overlooking the Franschhoek Valley. The preferred location for the cableway is proposed to extend from Haute Cabrière off the lower reaches of the Franschhoek/Olifantshoek Pass (Lambrechts Road) to Middagkrans Peak on the mountain; the latter within the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve which falls within a World Heritage Site buffer zone (Cape Floral Kingdom Kingdom Protected Areas).
The cableway is proposed by the Franschhoek Cableway Company (Pty) Ltd in partnership with Garaventa Doppelmayr AG. It would become the second of its kind in the country after the famous Table Mountain cableway. Garaventa Doppelmayr is the leading manufacturer and installer of cableways in the world.
The purpose is for the cableway to be a world class installation with associated tourism infrastructure that would include an upper station providing scenic views over the Franschhoek Valley. The concept is for the cableway to position Franschhoek as the culinary, wine and adventure capital of the country with various offerings at both bottom and top stations. This facility is also intended to provide access to the mountain top for hikers and paragliders. This, in turn, would be linked to the Mont Rochelle hiking trails.
The cableway route would be from Haute Cabrière on Erf 1466 passing over Monte Matre Farm, Erf 1467 (aerial servitude to be registered) to the upper platform on Erf 23 Middagkrans Mountain. Erf 23 falls under the ownership of the Stellenbosch Municipality.
