The purpose of this is application is for the Old Coach House and Stables, Rose Street, Bo-Kaap, Cape Town to protect the national heritage site under Section 27(18) of the National Heritage Resources Act, No. 25 of 1999. The objectives are to clear the rubble on an otherwise derelict site and make good for future planned conservation work by the City of Cape Town surrounding buildings.
The old coach house and stables site has been neglected for over 40 years, serving as a community dumping ground and requiring significant landscaping maintenance. The most critical issue is the collapsed asbestos roof sheets of the old stables, posing safety concerns. These issues must be addressed for future conservation efforts and building accessibility. Necessary tasks include clearing dumped waste, landscaping (removing invasive vegetation, cutting grass, and pruning trees under arborist supervision), and safely disposing of asbestos roof materials and rubble. The proposed activity aligns with the statutory provisions intended to protect and conserve South Africa's national heritage resources.
