The former residence of Steve Biko, were he lived with his wife and children. He was placed under house arrest at this site were he was monitored by the apartheid police. It is from this house that Steve Biko was laid to rest on the 25th of September 1977.
The site was declared a National Monument by the National Monuments Council (NMC) on 12 September 1997. Following the changes in heritage authority and legislation, with the implementation of the NHRA, it is currently a Provincial Heritage Site under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Cape.
