      Statement of Significance

      This pyramid-shaped sandstone beacon, with its mounted platinum pin, forms the western terminal point of Sir Thomas Maclear's Zwartland survey baseline, which was laid in 1840/41. It is closely associated with the development of surveying in South Africa.
