The old Armoury was presumably built in 1860 by military volunteers as an arsenal for the defence of the area around Newcastle. It was used as a mobilisation post during 1914-1918 and again in 1939 and is therefore closely associated with the history of Newcastle.

Status History: Proclaimed as a national monument 15 September 1978.
History; Presumably built by military volunteers as an arsenal for defence of the area around Newcastle, and as a mobilisation centre for troops to serve in other areas, it can best be described as a monument to the volunteer regiments.
