    Description

This is a memorial that was erected for the soldiers who were on board of the SS Mendi, which was sunk during the First World War (1914-1918). It commemorates not only the tragic event, but also highlights the role of black soldiers in World War I. A total of 616 South Africans, including 607 black troops serving in the South African Native Labour Contingent, died when the steamship SS Mendi sank in the English Channel on the way to France on 21 February 1917.
