Inscriptions
Established in August 1909 housing about 2599 people,the Pietermaritzburg concentration camps was the earliest camps to be set up. The camp is located on the bare that were administered by civilian authority,it was run by the military until October 1901. Initially the people were kept in tents that were made of canvas rooms and later solid housing was introduced. Despite some criticisms leveled,it had a low mortality rate compared to camps in the Transvaal. A total number of 167 people died at the camp over two years. The camp was closed in November 1902.
