Description
In the same year that Rhodes commissioned the statue of van Riebeeck for Cape Town, the Jewish millionaire, Sammy Marks, commissioned a statue of Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, President of the Transvaal Republic. He selected the young sculptor, Anton van Wouw, to undertake the work. It is to commemorate Paul Kruger and his presidential years as well as achievements.
Original Position
The Kruger statue was first erected in Princess Park without sentinels in 1923. It was then moved to Pretoria station in 1925. It finally moved to its present situation in 1953
