    Description

Jacaranda mimosifolio Imported from Brazil in 1888 the Jacaranda has come to grace many of our urban areas. South Africa's first Jacarandas were planted here in Bosman Street. These exotics have thrived in our environment and can be seen as symbolic of our struggle against xenophobia and all forms of discrimination. This monument was dedicated to the Jacaranda trees as a symbol of friendships to all refugees by the Executives Mayor of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, Father Smangalise Mkhatshwa , the MEC for Agriculture, Conservation, Environment and Land in Gauteng, Ms Mary Metcalfe, and the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry, Mr Ronnie Kasrils, on 18 October 2002

    Inscriptions
On National Arbor Week in 2001, Minister Ronnie Kasrils expressed the idea to commemorate the Jacaranda. A plaque was originally planned. This week coincided with the Third World Conference against racism, racial discrimination, Xenophobia and Intolerance. Though the Jacaranda trees have become part of our heritage, they have now been declared a category 3 invasive plant and may not be planted any more. The tree is associated with aliens in the country. Sources: Van Vuuren, M.J. Monuments List. Educational Services, Tshwane Community Library and Information Services
