Commemorates a prominent figure in South Africa. Governor of the cape between 1854-1861;Situated on the axis of the SA Library which site was chosen when he was Governor. He laid the foundation stone in 1858;Sculptural composition of books in one hand and a pile of books on the plinth adjacent commemorates the major collection of books and manuscripts which he collected and donated to the SA library in 1861. This collection is 5000 volumes which include 115 medieval and renaissance manuscripts, amongst them a copy of the four gospels in Latin dating AD 875 and 900, which is the oldest manuscript in South Africa;Sculpture has artistic qualities typical of a Victorian statue aesthetic.
