Motivation: Life and work of Howson RutherfordCommemoration of Howson Edward Rutherford, a public figure in Cape Town who served the last five years of his life as a member of the legislative council;Commemoration of a social movement (the Temperance movement) unlike the political figures/movement generally commemorated;Interesting scale to the statue being less than life size;
Original Position
It was originally erected by Howson Rutherford’s family in Adderley Street in front of the Commercial Exhibition Building. It was relocated to the Company’s Gardens in 1897 as traffic in Adderley Street greatly increased and the fountain was an obstruction.

There are two inscriptions on the fountain, both in English.
/This fountain was erected by his family as a memorial of Howson Edward Rutherford ESQ. who was for the greater portion of his active and benevolent life a resident of this colony and for five years at the close of it a member of the legislative council. /
/ Jesus said whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst But the water that I shall give him shall be in him as a well of water springing up into everlasting life /
