    One of a series of the same memorial (others situated in Delville Wood, near the village of Longueval in France and lower Terrace Union Buildings, Pretoria);The main component of five Deville Wood memorials situated on the Delville Wood Memorial axis, Company Gardens, a prominent position within the city.Situated within the Delville Wood Memorial Garden designed by prominent Architects Herbert Baker, Kendall and Cleland at the time of the building of the National Gallery;The series of memorial highlights the importance of Delville Wood in military history in South Africa and the magnitude of loss, suffering, and bravery associated with the battle;Symbolic of the overall theme of reconciliation between former opposing nations and the sense of compassion and dismay conveyed of a tragic event in history;Reflection of the divisions created amongst white South Africans on the state’s military support for Britain in World War One;Symbolic value established by two male figures clasping hands over a charging horse is representative of the British and Afrikaaner joining hands to fight together in the War;Typical of pre-1994 war memorials which reflected the perception that only white South Africans were affected by the wars even though 85 000 black and coloured soldiers volunteered for World War One and only allowed to serve in a non-combative role;Site of rituals surrounding the memorials in terms of placing wreaths for servicemen who lost their lives during the conflict.
