The memorial honors the great number of soldiers of the South African Heavy Artillery who lost their lives in World War One;It forms part of the Delville Wood Memorial Complex in the Company’s Gardens and is one of six World War One memorials in the central city;Situated within the memorial garden designed by prominent architects Herbert Baker, Kendall and Cleland at the time of the building of the National Gallery;Conception as a World War One memorial further dedicated to the memory of all artillerymen who laid down their lives for the country.
