    William Guybon Atherstone he was one of the first medical practitioner in South Africa doctors who used an ether as an anaesthetic when operating and was a strong force behind the foundation of the Albany General hospital he promoted better hospital facilities and treatment for mental patients. Doctor Artherstone William Guybon born 27 May in Nottingham. England, came to Cape Colony 1820 on the ocean in the emigrant party of Edward Dement,his uncle. Father Doctor John Atherstone ( 1791 _1853 ) ,Surgeon .Schooling Stephenson's Grammar School in Grahamstown, and uitenhage academy under Doctor James Rose-innes his Wife Cathrine Atherstone ,his cousin.Choldren Mary Cathrine ,Anez , Guybon damant, William John Gertrute , Edmund Bancroft and Walter hirschel career Medical practitioner, Resident in Grahamstown ,district surgeon of Albany on 1839 _-1987. Address 1867 Firstford house, Beaufort Street Grahamstown .Dies 28 June 1898 ,age 84 he had been blind for the 2 past years.
