Inscriptions
Erected in 1905, the giant Celtic cross stands in remembrance of the men of the Scottish Horse Regiment who lost their lives in the second Anglo‐Boer War. The Scottish Horse comprised two voluntary regiments of mounted infantry men raised in South Africa, Scotland, England, and Australia to fight on the side of the British in South Africa from 1900 to 1902. The plaques which were originally in bronze carry the names of the 125 men including four Zulu scouts. Horses were important in warfare as they enabled soldiers to move rapidly over the veld and over 300 000 horses died in this war.
