    Description

Harry Escombe was born in Notting Hill, England and emigrated to then Cape Colony in 1859 and relocated to Natal in 1860. He succeeded in becoming an attorney and in 1897 became premier of Natal when the former premier Sir John’s Robinson’s health worsened. As much as he is recognised as a statesman and a pivotal figure in the formation of Durban’s port, Escombe should also be acknowledged as a racist: “When he became Premier in 1897, he promptly enacted a trilogy of anti-Indian laws.” Escombe was against Indian immigration, Escombe said: “This country (Natal) was meant for Europeans and was never intended to be an Asiatic Colony.” The statue that outside Durban City Hall is a commemoration of himReferences
