Inscriptions
Mohandas K. Ghandi was a familiar figure at Johannesburg's first law courts located on government square, now renamed Ghandi square. He kept offices near the law court from 1903 to 1910, at the corner of rissik and Andersen street, and challenged racially discriminatory enactments, both inside and outside of the court. Ghandi's legal work soon merged with his Satyagraha(soul force) movement of percive resistance. Putting his legal career behind him, Ghandi dedicated himself to a lifetime of public service. Ghandi returned to India in 1914 after 21 full and fruitful years in South Africa. Continuing the search for truth which he had began in South Africa, he plunged into India's struggle for freedom and came to be hailed by his people as Mahatma, 'great soul'.
