There is a hole through his curved fingers and he would have been holding something that is now missing. The man's body is the pipe bowl with the opening at the top of his hat. The pipe stem projects out from the horse's chest.

In the rectangular opening between the bowl side and the vertical bar of the stem is a T shape filling the space and joining across from the vertical bar to the upper end of the pipe bowl. Filling the inner angle created in the angle between the mouthpiece bar and the vertical bar is a stepped design.
