/This memorial is dedicated to the people of Malay Camp who were forcibly removed from this site between 1939 and 1959/Kimberley’s Malay Camp, which has a history similar to Cape Town’s District Six, was a cosmopolitan suburb that sprung up in the early days of Kimberley’s existence. Sadly, it too was subject to forced ‘slums clearance’ after the owner of the land donated the area to the Kimberley Municipality in 1939. Mostof the houses, churches, mosques, shops and other buildings were demolished, making way for Kimberley’s Civic Centre. Sol Plaatje was a resident of Malay Camp. The Malay Camp Memorial was erected by the Malay Camp Heritage Association on 18 September 2006 and unveiled by Ms. E. D. Peters, Premier of the Northern Cape.
